Ask Josh Anything #14

The Tour de France is underway, and we've got questions (and answers) about it. For example, do racers REALLY still ride with tires at 120psi as Phil Liggett suggested? (Hint: no.) Why are riders turning their hoods inward? Is tubeless on the verge of replacing tubular as the wheel setup of choice?

We've also got a great crop of questions from our listeners, including:

  • What are the meaningful aero differences between solo and group riding?
  • Is a wheel upgrade worth it when the primary difference is round vs aero spokes?
  • What is the most efficient way to execute your bottom-of-segment turnaround in an Everesting attempt?

Best road wheelset right now? Go…

Also, what do you think about the 3t Discus 40/45 wheels and the 3t Exploro Racemax?

I can’t find episode #15 so I comment here: Pogacar was in the white jersey during the deciding TdF ITT so he probably lost the same claimed 25-30 seconds.

The discussion regarding the spokes on the new Rapide rims has me wondering if Josh will “name names” on aero performers and fails with modern wheelsets. I’m also recalling the brief allusion Josh made several episodes back to wheelset performance in tunnels vs dynamic “real-world” testing that had some accompanying internet drama.

What are the best/fastest general wheelsets for road bikes right now with a range of 25-28mm nominal tires, and what’s the value play? Where are the tradeoffs? Roval Rapide, Enve 4.5ar, 5.6, 7.8, HED Vanquish, new DT Swiss rims, etc. or some unknown challenger.

Would love to hear the musings on this topic, as the marketing noise seems a bit too wild for a regular consumer to sift.

I think it is this episode that you say you can put a latex tube in the tubeless ready corsa speed. I’d like to question whether you have tried this on a traditional narrow rim like the zipp 900 clincher. I’ve found that despite super careful installation and loads of talc, the thick thick beads of the corsa speed don’t give enough room in the rim bed for the tube and so it is overstretched filling that gap. image of the tube here https://twitter.com/NickEnglish21/status/849365895537451008 (same on vittoria tubes). It is enough stretch that the tube bursts.

Love the podcast…I’m curious as to the typical rim depths of pro cyclist or Tour de France, looking at it on tv they seem shallow. The extension to the question is for me at 165 lbs is there any reason to be on wheels with 60+ depth?
