When waxing your chain with Hot Wax + Speed Chip you will want to first strip and clean your chain and then melt your wax at 75°c and submerge your chain for 10 minutes at this temperature before removing from the wax.
How much wax do I use to wax my chain?
We recommend adding around half of your bag of Hot Wax to this system or around 250g to help prevent overflow. You will want to ensure that your chain is fully submerged in the wax.
Should their be excess wax on my chain?
It is completely normal for there to be excess wax on the ouside of your chain. This will likley flake off during your first few rides. If you would like to lessen this flaking, you can run your waxed chain along a broom stick or rounded table edge to remove some of this wax before installing on your bike. It is normal for there to be a break in period of around 20-30 minutes when riding on a freshly waxed chain.
When do I know it is time to rewax?
We recommend that you re-wax your chain around every 15 hours of riding or 300-400km. Your chain will tell you when it is time for a re-wax as it will start to become noisey.
How many chains can I wax with one bag of Hot Wax?
One full bag of Hot Wax (500g) can wax between 40-60 standard chains depending on the application method.
What are the main benefits of Hot Wax?
Hot Wax can provide you with a cleaner system, quieter system, more efficient system, and increase the lifespan of your components when compared to a standard oil based lubricant.
Can I over heat or damage my wax?
If our Hot Wax is heated above 125°C it can become burned or damaged. If your wax has been damaged, you will notice that it will cool to be a slightly yellow color.
Should I wax my quick link?
We do not recommend that you wax your quick link. This will help to ensure a smooth installation.
What should I do to prevent rusting on my Hot Waxed Chain?
Hot Wax does not do the best job at protecting your chain from rust when it is exposed to water. Please ensure that you thoroughly dry your chain when you return from a wet ride. You can do this by wiping your chain down with a microfiber towel or using an air compressor. You may also want to consider adding an application of Super Secret Drip Lube or re-waxing your chain to ensure that all water is removed.
Can I re-use my Secret Chain Blend Hot Wax?
Yes! You will absolutely want to reuse your Hot Wax. This is not a single use product and should supply you with enough wax for up to 70 applications.
Why does my wax look dirty when it is re-melted in my Chain Waxing System?
It is completely normal for a layer of black "sediment" to appear at the bottom of your Chain Waxing System bowl. This is not dirt, rather it is the tungsten disulfide particles. Please do not clean these out of your Hot Wax. Simply mix them back into the wax with your chain at the start of your waxing process.
What makes Secret Chain Blend different from standard bike chain wax?
Secret Chain Blend is a blend of different waxes and additives to be extremely efficient and last up to 300 miles of riding in a single application.
How long does the waxing effect last?
Secret Chain Blend lasts up to 300 miles on its own and can be topped up with Super Secret Chain lube or re-waxed in the pot. Adding EnduranceChip to the pot can increase the single application longevity up to 800 miles.
Will waxing this way reduce drivetrain wear?
Absolutely! Testing at ZeroFrictionCycling confirms that a properly cared for chain with Secret Chain Blend can last over 25,000km.
Is this wax safe for indoor application or shared pots?
We would recommend a dedicated pot so you don’t eat wax or the additives. Tungsten Disulfide is the main additive used and is approved for marine paint so it is extremely safe. There are no PFAS chemicals in any of SILCA’s lubricants.
