What Are Marginal Gains (and Do They Really Matter)?

Welcome to the first episode of The Marginal Gains Podcast, presented by Silca — the show that makes a big deal about the little things, and how those little things can be a big deal.

In this first episode, Josh Poertner, Hottie (Michael Hotten) and Fatty (Elden Nelson) obsess over about what marginal gains are, why they matter, and the huge difference Josh has seen them make in building bike components, in pro cycling teams' success, and even outside the cycling world altogether.

It's a show for the thinking cyclist. Enjoy Marginal Gains!

After listening and learning much over the past several years, I thank you. You have contributed to my success on a bike in my seventh decade. My fastest TTs have come in my 60s. Recently, though, a chunk of grit has become caught in my chain, and it just keeps grinding: While I respect a business owner’s right to have a hiring policy, to have a policy that categorically precludes the top professionals in the very industry the business serves, seems to me to be self-limiting. I can attest that over a life of bicycling and engineering, my best ideas and solutions have come to me while riding. Often, these ideas come while winding down after the most grueling of efforts. Not all employees should be selected from the top echelon, but to preclude a category that may hold people of talent who have proven their ability to consistently dedicate to their chosen vocation misses out on a possibly critical opportunity, and investment in your and all our futures. After all, they were all clever enough to choose a life engaged with one of humankind’s greatest inventions.
